Gila Herd

It began in 1996, when ISPMB was notified about a proposed removal of approximately 75 wild horses that were located near Gila Bend, Arizona. These wild horses were not protected by the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act and therefore were going to be gathered and sold at auction. In simple terms, this means being sold to the highest bidder for meat consumption in Europe. More on the Herd

Dante – Dante is an earnest little guy who was born this past spring. Like most of the Gila horses, he is a dun with a dark strip down his spine.
Tempest – Tempest lives up to his name. He is a stunning stallion with a flair for drama and theatrics. He has the number “48” brand from his earlier years, and bears many battle wounds from his sparring days.
Damian – Damian (pictured on the left) is as gentle as the photo shows. He is a beautiful stallion who looks just like his early Gila ancestors who cameover from Europe on ships.

White Sands Herd

A total of 70 wild horses were transported from the harsh sands of the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico to the lush, green pastures of South Dakota. In 1999, this transfer culminated a ten year effort by ISPMB to protect the wild horses of White Sands Missile Range. More on the herd

CHIEF – Chief is a very special stallion. He is shy, proud, and wise, much like some of the Native American people who used to ride his ancestors. He is a beautiful and regal horse.
Magpie – Magpie is a very glamorous girl. She has very unique markings, with a white blaze nearly covering her lovely face. Characteristic to all the White Sands horses, and the hardships from where she came, she has a proud disposition with a stoic heart.
Bachelor – Bachelor is a majestic boy. He loves spending his afternoons leading the herd in a full-fledged gallop. With his flying mane and tail bannering, he is a sight to see!

Catnip Herd

Eighty-two wild horses arrived at the ISPMB in South Dakota from the Sheldon Wildlife Range (SWR) in northern Nevada. The SWR is not mandated by Congress to protect wild horses and propose to reduce herds to 125 animals with the eventual possibility of eliminating wild horses altogether on the range.
