Introduce your clients to a unique American experience that can be found nowhere else in the world.

More than a breathtakingly beautiful refuge for three rare herds of wild horses, Sunka Wakan celebrates the interrelationship of the horse, the Lakota, and the land.

A photographer's delight, glory in the splendor of the scenic Great Plains located on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Surrounded by the sweet scent of prairie grass, your personal tour guides will give you detailed information about the preservation of these unique wild horses, the interweaving of the Lakota culture with the horse, and the geologic formations and pre-historic fossils found in this lush old sea bed. Tour by four-wheel vehicles or horse-drawn wagon.

Sunka Wakan, named after the Lakota word for horse, is a project of the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros, the oldest and largest wild horse and burro organization in the United States. Tours are led by wild horse historians and behavioral experts, or a local Lakota guide, and can offer your clients the opportunity to observe and use horse whisperer techniques in the training arena.

Tours run from May 15 through October 15 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The site is located on the Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux Reservation. Take scenic Highway 212 East, just 2.5 hour northeast of Rapid City, South Dakota.

Help Save the Virginia Range Herd!

The Cheyenne River Sioux are at risk of losing 22,000 acres of their tribal land. As a result the tribe is having to lease their Tribal Park for cattle grazing to raise money, sold most of their buffalo, and have turned about 300 head of Virginia Range mustangs over to ISPMB. These horses need alternative habitat right away. You can help!
